Private medical insurance is not designed to replace the NHS, which remains essential for emergency care and ongoing GP support, but it can provide an additional option for accessing treatment more quickly.

Understanding how private medical insurance works can help you decide whether it is a suitable option for your situation.

1. Quick Access To Healthcare

Perhaps the most significant of the many benefits of private health care is the speed of service. When you’re feeling unwell or in pain, waiting months for a diagnostic test or a specialist appointment can be incredibly stressful. With private cover, you can often see a consultant within a matter of days.

Whether you need an MRI scan, an X-ray, or a blood test, private facilities can often provide these almost immediately. This allows for earlier diagnosis and faster treatment, which can be crucial for your recovery. By choosing a policy that offers fast-track access, you’re ensuring that a health issue doesn't have to put your entire life on hold.

2. Comprehensive Health Coverage

Another one of the major advantages of private health insurance is the sheer breadth of what is covered. Modern policies are designed to be thorough, looking after you from the moment you suspect something is wrong until your recovery is complete. This includes inpatient treatments where you stay in a hospital overnight, and often outpatient care like physiotherapy or specialist consultations. However, it is important to understand that long-term or chronic conditions are not usually covered in the same way.

3. Flexibility In Treatment Options

One of the often-overlooked benefits of private medical insurance is the level of choice you have. In the public system, you’re generally assigned a hospital and a consultant based on your location and availability. With private insurance, you have a say in who treats you and where that treatment happens.

This flexibility allows you to choose a consultant who is a specialist in your specific condition, select a private hospital that’s convenient for you and your family, and pick an appointment time that fits around your work or childcare commitments.

4. Better Support For Cancer Care

When people ask about the benefits of private health care, cancer cover is often at the top of the list. Many private insurers offer what is known as full cancer cover. This is a huge advantage because it can provide access to drugs and treatments that may not yet be available on the NHS due to funding restrictions or strict criteria.

Private cancer cover often includes:

Access to specialised cancer hospitals and dedicated oncology nurses.

Advanced radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments.

Breakthrough drugs and clinical trials that are just entering the market.

Extensive follow-up care and reconstructive surgery.

5. Access To Support Services

One of the modern advantages of private health insurance is the range of daily support services included with your policy. Most leading UK insurers now provide digital GP apps. These allow you to book a video consultation with a doctor from your phone, often within a short timeframe, even on weekends.

In addition to virtual doctors, many plans offer mental health support and counselling sessions, direct access to wellness specialists and the option of a second medical opinion to give you extra confidence in a diagnosis. Some policies also provide access to physiotherapy and osteopathy without needing a GP referral.

Making A Financially Sound Decision

It’s a common myth that private healthcare is only for the very wealthy. In reality, there are many different levels of cover available to suit various budgets. You can choose to add an excess to your policy, which is a small amount you pay toward your treatment in exchange for a significantly lower monthly premium.

Investing in your health is one of the most important decisions you can make. When you weigh up the benefits of private medical insurance, you have to consider the value of your time and your peace of mind. For many people, the ability to avoid a six-month wait for surgery is worth every penny.

Private Health Insurance For Endometriosis: A UK Guide

Private health insurance can help by providing faster access to specialists and diagnostic care. While cover usually depends on the condition not being pre-existing, having a policy in place can make a significant difference when it comes to getting a diagnosis and starting treatment sooner.

Private health insurance can help by providing faster access to specialists and diagnostic care. While cover usually depends on the condition not being pre-existing, having a policy in place can make a significant difference when it comes to getting a diagnosis and starting treatment sooner.

Navigating the world of healthcare can be complex, especially when you’re trying to find private health insurance endometriosis specialists who understand the nuances of the condition. While insurance won’t change the diagnosis, it certainly can change the speed and comfort of your treatment journey.

The Path To An Initial Diagnosis

One of the biggest hurdles with endometriosis is getting a clear diagnosis. It’s common for symptoms to be dismissed or mistaken for other issues, leading to years of uncertainty. If you have private health insurance in place, you may be able to reduce the waiting time between seeing a GP and accessing a specialist, which is often a key concern for many people in the UK.

Your insurance typically covers the cost of initial consultations with a gynaecologist. They can order the necessary diagnostic tests, such as specialised ultrasounds or MRIs. Most importantly, it often covers a diagnostic laparoscopy. This is a small surgical procedure that’s currently the only definitive way to confirm if endometriosis is present.

Surgery And Surgical Options

Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the next step is often surgical intervention. For many women, this involves complex procedures to manage the spread of the tissue. Fortunately, private health insurance may cover certain surgical options, depending on the policy and individual circumstances.

If the condition is severe, a surgeon might recommend a hysterectomy (surgery to remove the womb). Many private policies will cover this procedure if it’s deemed medically necessary to treat your symptoms. Additionally, surgeons can perform excision or ablation to remove adhesions. These are the bands of scar-like tissue that cause organs to stick together, which is often the source of intense pelvic pain.

The Reality Of Pre-Existing Conditions

A common question people ask is whether they can get private health insurance which covers pre-existing conditions. It’s important to be straightforward here: if you’ve already been diagnosed with endometriosis or have sought medical advice for related symptoms in the past five years, most insurers will view it as a pre-existing condition.

In most cases, pre-existing conditions are not covered at the start of a policy. However, this doesn't mean you’ll never be covered. Some types of underwriting, like a moratorium, may cover certain conditions in the future if they are not chronic. For a moratorium to consider coverage, you usually need to go for a set period (often two years) without any symptoms, treatment, or medication.

It is important to note that chronic conditions, such as endometriosis, are unlikely to be covered if you experienced symptoms before taking out the policy, as these symptoms typically do not fully disappear. It’s always best to check the specific terms of a policy before signing up so you know exactly where you stand.

Understanding The Limits Of Ongoing Cover

Private medical insurance in the UK is primarily for acute conditions. This means it is designed to cover treatments intended to resolve or improve a condition.

Because endometriosis is often a long-term, chronic condition, there is usually limited cover for ongoing management for maintenance and monitoring. Once the initial surgical treatment is complete, things like regular check-ups to monitor the condition or long-term pain management are typically handled by the NHS. Insurance is there to step in when you need a specific intervention or surgery, rather than for the lifetime management of the condition.

Is Private Medical Insurance Right For You?

If you’re currently healthy and don't have a history of pelvic pain, taking out a policy now is a smart way to protect your future. It ensures that if symptoms do appear, you’ll be covered for everything from the first scan to the final surgery.

Even if you’ve already experienced symptoms, a policy can still be worthwhile for other health issues that might arise. While you may find it difficult to get private health insurance which covers pre-existing conditions immediately, having cover in place for everything else provides significant peace of mind.

Need Help Understanding Your Options?

Dealing with endometriosis can be challenging, and understanding how health insurance fits into that can feel complicated. Taking the time to review your options carefully can help you avoid confusion later on.

MoreHealth can help you compare policies and understand how different types of cover work, so you can make an informed decision based on your situation. Get in touch with the team to find out more.

Is The Six Week Option Right For Your Health Cover?

When you’re looking to protect your health, you want a plan that fits your specific needs without paying for extras you might not require. The six week option is designed to act as a safety net, stepping in only when the public system cannot treat you quickly. Understanding how it works is the first step towards making a confident decision about your future care.

Understanding The Six Week Option

The six week option is a clause you can add to a health insurance policy to help manage your monthly costs. Essentially, it tells the insurer that you’ll use the NHS for your treatment if the waiting list is shorter than six weeks. However, if the NHS waiting time for your specific procedure or inpatient treatment is longer than six weeks, your private insurance kicks in immediately.

This approach allows you to use both NHS and private care, depending on waiting times. You still have access to the NHS for minor issues or quick procedures, but it can help reduce the likelihood of longer waiting times for significant medical intervention. It’s a way of ensuring that a health issue never leaves you stuck in a lengthy queue for a prolonged period.

Benefits Of The Six Week Option

Because the insurer knows the NHS will handle some of the workload, they can offer you a lower monthly price. If you’re looking for health insurance six week option benefits, cost-effectiveness is usually at the top of the list.

Lower Monthly Premiums: It’s one of the most effective ways to make private healthcare affordable for a wider range of budgets.

Reduced Waiting Times: You may be able to access treatment within a shorter timeframe, depending on NHS availability, either through the NHS or privately.

High-Quality Care: Whether you go through the NHS or a private hospital, you’re ensured professional medical attention.

Flexibility: It allows you to maintain a level of private protection while staying integrated with the UK’s existing healthcare framework.

How the Six-Week Referral Process Works

If you have a policy with a major provider, the process is straightforward but specific. First, your GP will refer you for treatment. You then need to find out the current NHS waiting time for that specific procedure in your local area.

If the NHS can see you within six weeks, you proceed as a public patient. However, if the wait is longer, you simply contact your insurer with the referral details. They will verify the waiting time and then authorise your private treatment. It’s a seamless process designed to remove the stress of administrative checks during what is already a difficult time for you and your family.

Emergency Health Plans vs Six Week Option

The six week option is specifically for those planned treatments that are not life-threatening but are life-impacting. This includes things like hip replacements, knee surgeries, or specialist consultations. While an emergency plan is designed for immediate trauma, the six-week clause focuses on your quality of life and ensuring that a chronic or painful condition is dealt with as quickly as possible.

Who Can Opt For The Six Week Option?

Most people seeking individual or family cover can choose this path. It’s particularly popular with:

Young Professionals: Those who want protection but have a limited budget for extras.

Families: Parents who want to ensure their children are seen quickly without the high cost of full private cover.

Healthy Seniors: Individuals who are happy to use the NHS for most things but want to avoid long queues for joint surgeries or cataracts.

What To Look For In A Policy

When comparing health insurance six week option plans, pay close attention to the fine print regarding diagnostic tests. Some policies will still cover your initial outpatient appointments and tests privately, even if the eventual surgery falls under the six-week NHS rule. This is a huge benefit because it means you get your diagnosis and specialist opinion fast, which is often the part of the journey that takes the longest in the public system.

It's also important to ensure your chosen insurer works with hospitals in your local area. This will help to prevent lengthy travel times and make the care you receive even more convenient.

Understanding Private Medical Insurance

At its core, private medical insurance is a policy that covers the cost of private healthcare for acute conditions. These are illnesses or injuries that can be cured with treatment. It’s important to understand that it is not designed to cover chronic conditions that require ongoing management. Cancer is eligible for treatment under a private health insurance policy.

If you have a life-threatening emergency, you'll still need to use the NHS. Accident and Emergency departments are specifically equipped for trauma, and private hospitals generally don't have these facilities. However, once an emergency is over, or if you're dealing with a non-urgent issue like a hip replacement or a specialist consultation, private cover can provide quicker access to treatment. Even if you have a policy, you can still use the NHS whenever you choose.

Benefits Of Private Health Insurance

One of the main reasons people consider private health insurance is the ability to access care more quickly and have more choice over treatment. We all know that NHS waiting times can be long for elective surgeries. With private cover, you can often see a specialist and receive treatment often sooner than standard waiting times.

Other key advantages include:

Choice of Consultant: You can often choose the specific specialist who treats you.

Private Facilities: You'll typically have a private room with en-suite facilities, which makes the recovery process much more comfortable.

Flexible Appointments: You can book consultations at times that suit your schedule, which can make it easier to fit around your schedule.

Access to Specialist Drugs: Some treatments and drugs aren't always available on the NHS due to funding restrictions but may be included depending on the policy.

Private Medical Insurance For Family

When you're a parent, there's nothing more stressful than a child being unwell. Opting for private medical insurance for your family ensures that your loved ones have access to the best care without the wait. Family policies are often more cost-effective than taking out individual plans for every person, and they provide a collective sense of security.

Factors To Consider When Choosing Private Health Insurance

Because there are so many providers and types of cover, choosing the right plan can feel overwhelming. You'll need to decide on the level of cover you want, such as whether you want outpatient care (consultations and tests) or just inpatient care (surgeries and hospital stays).

You should also consider the hospital list. Some policies only allow you to use a specific group of hospitals, while others give you access to almost any private facility in the UK. Another factor is the excess (the amount you agree to pay toward your treatment). Choosing a higher excess can lower your monthly premiums, which is often a smart move for business owners looking to provide the benefits of private health insurance to their employees while managing a budget.

Common Misconceptions About Private Medical Insurance

There are several myths that often stop people from exploring their options. One of the biggest is that private insurance is only for the wealthy. In reality, there are many affordable plans tailored to different budgets. Another misconception is that you lose your right to NHS care if you go private. This simply isn't true. The NHS is still there for you whenever you need it; private insurance just gives you an additional pathway.

Balancing Costs And Care

It's also worth noting that many policies now include digital GP services. This allows you to speak to a doctor via video call on your phone, often on the same day. For many people, this feature alone makes the policy worthwhile, as it saves the hassle of trying to book a physical appointment at a local surgery.

Making An Informed Decision

The healthcare market in the UK is constantly evolving, and what worked for you five years ago might not be the best fit today. Whether you're looking for private medical insurance for your family or a group scheme for your employees, it's important to get advice that’s straightforward and transparent. You want a plan that provides fast-track access without any hidden surprises in the fine print.

When looking into private health insurance, one of the most common points of confusion is how your medical history is assessed. Terms like full medical underwriting and moratorium underwriting can feel unclear, but they play a big role in what is and isn’t covered later on. Understanding the difference early can help avoid unexpected issues when you come to make a claim.

Although this article focuses primarily on the nuances of full medical underwriting or moratorium for new applicants, there are three main ways to establish your cover:

Full medical underwriting

Moratorium underwriting

The Switch Option

The Switch Option is designed for people who already have an existing policy and are considering moving to a new provider. It allows insurers to carry over existing exclusions in certain cases, helping to maintain continuity of cover.

 Contact Us

Three Ways To Assess Your Medical History

1. Moratorium Underwriting

A moratorium is a common choice because it is quick to set up and requires very little upfront information. You do not need to complete detailed medical questionnaires when applying. Instead, the insurer applies a standard set of rules to determine what is covered.

How it works: The insurer generally looks back at the five years before your policy started. Any condition you had during those five years is automatically excluded. However, these exclusions aren't always permanent. If you have the policy for two consecutive years and don't receive any treatment, medication, or even advice from a doctor for that specific condition, the moratorium may be lifted, and you’re usually covered for it moving forward.

However, it’s important to be aware that this convenience can lead to delays later on if you need to make a claim, as the insurer will need to review your medical history at that point.

2. Full Medical Underwriting

Full medical underwriting (FMU) involves completing a detailed health questionnaire where you list every medical event, consultation and chronic condition you’ve had, typically over the last five to ten years.

How it works: The insurer’s medical team reviews your application (and sometimes contacts your GP) before they issue the policy. They will then provide a list of personal exclusions — or, depending on your history, no exclusions may be applied at all. You’ll know exactly what is and isn't covered before you pay your first premium.

This approach provides clarity from the beginning, which can be helpful if you want to know exactly where you stand before using the policy.

3. The Switch Option

The Switch Option (often called Continued Personal Medical Exclusions or CPME) is specifically for people who already have a private health insurance policy and want to move to a new provider.

How it works: Switching providers using your existing underwriting is the best way to protect your cover for pre-existing conditions and past medical history. This option prevents you from losing the cover you have already built up because the new insurer agrees to take on the same exclusions that you had with your previous company. This ensures your continuity of care remains intact without the need to start the process over again.

Many people assume that switching insurers means starting again or losing cover for existing conditions. In many cases, this is not the case, and options like this are designed to maintain continuity where possible.

The Application Process: How Much Information Is Required?

One of the main differences between these options is how much information you need to provide at the start.

With a moratorium, the application is straightforward. You do not need to share details of your medical history, and cover can often begin quickly.

With full medical underwriting, the process is more detailed. You will need to go through your medical history and disclose any relevant conditions. This can take more time, but it means the insurer has already assessed your situation before the policy begins.

For many people, the choice comes down to whether they prefer a quicker setup or more certainty from the outset.

What Is Better Moratorium Or Full Medical Underwriting For Your Premiums?

You might wonder if one method is cheaper than the other. Generally, the underwriting method itself doesn't have a massive impact on the price of your monthly premium. Insurers tend to price based on your age, location and the level of cover you choose.

However, FMU can sometimes be slightly cheaper because the insurer knows exactly what risk they’re taking on from day one. Because they’ve already excluded certain conditions based on your disclosures, they can sometimes offer a more competitive rate. With a Moratorium, the insurer is taking a bit of a gamble on your history, so the price reflects that unknown factor. If you’re asking what is better moratorium or full medical underwriting for your wallet, it’s often a very close call.

Coverage For Pre-Existing Conditions

Both approaches usually place restrictions on pre-existing conditions, but they handle them differently over time.

Moratorium: Conditions from the previous five years are excluded at first. If you remain symptom, treatment and advice free for a set period, often two years, cover may be available later.

Full medical underwriting: Exclusions are decided upfront based on your medical history and are usually permanent, although some policies may allow reviews in the future.

Claims Process Comparison

The claims experience can vary depending on the underwriting method.

With full medical underwriting, the insurer has already reviewed your history. This can make the process feel more straightforward, as fewer checks are needed when you make a claim.

With a moratorium, the insurer will usually review your medical records at the point of claim to confirm whether the condition is eligible. This can sometimes lead to delays while the necessary information is gathered.

Timeframe For Enrollment And Renewal Terms

If you’re in a hurry to get covered, a Moratorium is the clear choice for enrolment. You can often be insured within minutes. FMU can take several days or even weeks if the insurer needs to clarify something with your GP. At renewal, both types of policies generally work the same way. Your premium will be reviewed based on your age and any claims you’ve made.

Making The Right Choice For Your Health

Ultimately, the right choice depends on your personal situation and what matters most to you. If you prefer a quick and simple setup, a moratorium may be suitable. If you want clarity about what is covered from the start, full medical underwriting may be the better option. Taking time to understand how each approach works can help you avoid confusion later on.

Choosing private medical insurance for your business isn’t always straightforward. With multiple providers, varying levels of cover, and complex terms, many employers aren’t sure what they’re actually comparing or whether they’re making the right decision.

Choosing private medical insurance for your business isn’t always straightforward. With multiple providers, varying levels of cover, and complex terms, many employers aren’t sure what they’re actually comparing or whether they’re making the right decision.

For many people, the real concern is making sure they can access treatment quickly when they need it. This is often where employee private medical insurance becomes relevant, helping reduce delays in diagnosis or specialist care that can lead to longer recovery times and added stress for both individuals and the wider team.

Retention is equally important. Replacing a skilled employee is expensive and time-consuming. When staff feel supported and have access to private healthcare, they’re more likely to stay loyal. According to industry data, health insurance is consistently ranked as one of the most valued benefits in the UK. It provides peace of mind not just for the employee, but for their family too.

 Contact Us

Accessing Help Quickly To Reduce Staff Absence

One of the primary reasons to implement small business health insurance plans is the speed of service. When an employee falls ill or suffers an injury, the goal is to get them back to full health as quickly as possible. Private cover allows staff to bypass lengthy NHS waiting lists for diagnostic tests, scans and specialist consultations. Instead of waiting weeks to find out what’s wrong, they can often see a consultant within days.

Faster access to diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference to recovery times. Instead of dealing with prolonged uncertainty, individuals can begin treatment sooner, which often leads to better outcomes and less disruption overall.

Managing Various Budgets And Different Levels Of Cover

It’s a common misconception that private healthcare is only for large corporations with big budgets. In reality, policies can be adapted depending on needs and budget, which makes them accessible for smaller teams as well. You don't have to provide the same level of cover to everyone if your budget doesn't allow for it. Many schemes allow you to create different tiers of cover based on the structure of your business.

Some policies allow flexibility in how cover is structured, including options for employees to extend cover to partners or children at their own cost. This can provide additional value without significantly increasing overall costs.

Types Of Private Medical Insurance And Coverage Options

The healthcare landscape in the UK offers a wide range of choices. Most policies cover acute conditions, typically including inpatient treatments, hospital stays, and surgeries. However, you can add or remove various options to tailor the plan to your requirements.

Flexibility is a major benefit of modern schemes. You can opt for outpatient cover, which includes consultations and diagnostic tests that don't require an overnight stay. There are also options for mental health support, physiotherapy, and dental or optical cover. By tailoring these options, you can ensure the policy fits the specific needs of your workforce without paying for features that won't be used. However, not all policies are the same, and understanding what is included and what is optional is key when comparing providers.

Using Self-Pay Excesses To Control Costs

If cost is a concern, one common way to manage premiums is through the use of excesses. Just like car insurance, a self-pay excess is an amount the employee pays towards their treatment before the insurance kicks in. By including a small excess, such as £100 or £250, you can significantly lower the annual premium paid by the business.

This makes employee private medical insurance much more affordable for a growing company. It also encourages employees to use the service responsibly. Because the employee pays the excess directly to the hospital or consultant at the time of treatment, the business keeps its fixed costs predictable and manageable.

Budget Considerations For Your Business Health Plans

Budgeting for private medical insurance for small businesses requires a long-term view. While there’s an upfront cost, the return on investment comes through reduced absenteeism and improved morale. Most insurers offer various ways to control costs beyond just excesses. You can choose a six-week wait option, where the insurance only pays for private treatment if the NHS waiting list is longer than six weeks. This is a popular way for SMEs to provide a safety net while keeping premiums low.

What To Look For In A Policy

When comparing small business health insurance plans, don't just look at the monthly price. Look at the quality of the hospital network and the ease of the claims process. You want a policy that’s easy for your staff to use. Many modern providers now offer digital GP services, allowing employees to speak to a doctor via a video call on their phone.

Contact Us For Expert Advice

Choosing the right cover for your team doesn't have to be confusing.
May is Healthy Vision Month, and at Morehealth, we’re supporting this initiative by helping to raise awareness of some common eye problems and providing you with top tips to keep your eyes healthy.

May is Healthy Vision Month, and at Morehealth, we’re supporting this initiative by helping to raise awareness of some common eye problems and providing you with top tips to keep your eyes healthy.

Our eyes are among our most vital organs, but many of us take our eyesight for granted until problems arise. In this post, we will look at some of the most common eye conditions and offer practical tips for protecting your vision and maintaining your eye health.

Common eye problems

Eye problems can be present at birth or develop later in life. They can occur due to problems with the shape of your eye, infection or damage to the structures inside your eyes.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that lines your eyelid and eyeball. It can affect one or both eyes and may be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, exposure to irritants or an allergy. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are highly contagious and can easily be spread to other people, or from one eye to the other. To reduce the risk of spreading conjunctivitis, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, avoid touching your eyes, and don’t share items such as towels, facecloths and pillows.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis include:

Redness, itching, burning or a feeling of grit in your eye

Discharge: Your eyelids may be stuck together in the morning

Watery eyes

Treatment for conjunctivitis

Treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the type of conjunctivitis you have.

Viral conjunctivitis: Usually resolves on its own within a week or two. Clean your eyelids by wiping them gently using boiled, cooled water and a clean cotton pad (use a separate pad for each eye). Placing a cold flannel over your eyes can also help to relieve symptoms.

Bacterial conjunctivitis: Is treated with antibiotic eye drops.

Allergic or irritant conjunctivitis: Treatment includes avoiding the source of the allergy or irritant and using antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops.

Dry Eye Syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca)

Tears help lubricate your eyes and prevent irritation. Dry eye syndrome is a common condition where your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or your tears dry up too quickly. The condition isn’t usually serious, but it can be uncomfortable.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome include:

Burning, stinging or redness of your eyes

Blurred vision

Sensitivity to light

Treatment for dry eye syndrome

The main treatment for dry eye syndrome is lubricating eye drops (artificial tears). You can also address the cause of your dry eyes by avoiding irritants like dust and cigarette smoke, taking regular breaks when using a computer and switching from contact lenses to glasses.

If your condition doesn’t improve with over-the-counter treatments, your GP may prescribe a stronger medication such as cyclosporine.

In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend inserting punctal plugs. These are devices that block tear drainage and maintain moisture within your eyes.

Refractive errors

Refractive errors are a common type of eye problem that affects your vision. They occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing correctly on your retina.

Types of refractive error include:

Myopia (near-sightedness): Affects your ability to see distant objects.

Hyperopia (farsightedness): Affects your ability to see close-up objects.

Astigmatism: Affects your ability to see both close-up and distant objects.

Presbyopia: An age-related condition where close-up objects gradually appear blurred and out of focus.

Symptoms of refractive errors include:

Blurred vision

Eye strain

Headaches

Difficulty reading or seeing distant objects

Treatment for refractive errors

The main treatment for refractive errors is glasses or contact lenses. These work by bending the light as it enters the eye and allowing it to focus correctly on the retina. In some cases, laser surgery to reshape your cornea (the surface of your eye) can permanently correct a refractive error.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition where there is damage to the optic nerve (the nerve that connects the eye to the brain), usually due to fluid build-up in the front of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. It can lead to vision loss or blindness if not treated early. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

Symptoms of glaucoma include:

Gradual loss of peripheral (outer) vision

Blurred vision

Rainbow coloured circles around lights

Tunnel vision in advanced stages

Rarely, glaucoma can develop suddenly, causing symptoms such as:

Severe eye pain and redness

Tenderness around the eyes

Blurred vision

Halos around lights

Nausea and vomiting

Headache

Treatment for glaucoma

The initial treatment for glaucoma is prescription eye drops to reduce the pressure inside your eye. Other treatments for glaucoma include laser treatment and surgery to improve fluid drainage and reduce pressure inside the eye.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the lens (the transparent part of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina) becomes cloudy. The condition is more common in people over the age of 60.

Symptoms of cataracts include:

Cloudy or blurred vision

Difficulty seeing at night

Difficulty reading or watching television

Seeing halos around lights

Double vision

Increased sensitivity to light and glare

Colours appear faded

Treatment for cataracts

In the early stages, you may be able to manage your cataracts by using stronger lighting, updating your glasses or using magnifying glasses for close-up work such as reading. More advanced cataracts are treated with surgery to replace your cloudy lens with an artificial one.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is a condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. It can affect one or both eyes and is most common in people over the age of 50. There are two types of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD.

Dry AMD: This is the most common type of AMD and occurs when the macula gradually thins out over time.

Wet AMD: This type of AMD is less common and more severe. It occurs when abnormal new blood vessels form behind the retina and leak fluid, causing vision loss.

Symptoms of AMD include:

Blurred or reduced central vision, which can make recognising faces, reading and driving difficult

Straight lines may appear wavy

Sensitivity to bright light

Seeing flickering or flashing lights, or seeing things that are not there (hallucinations)

Treatment for AMD

The treatment for AMD depends on the type of AMD you have.

Dry AMD: There is currently no treatment for dry AMD, and the focus is on support to help you cope with reduced vision.

Wet AMD: Is treated with anti-VEGF injections to reduce blood vessel growth and leakage.

Top tips for healthy eyes

Many of us don’t think about our eye health until something goes wrong, but there are things you can do to protect your eyes, help prevent eye issues and catch any problems early. These include:

Regular eye exams

Many eye conditions have no symptoms in the early stages, and regular eye examinations are essential to pick up any changes early. It is recommended that most adults have an eye exam every two years, but this can vary depending on your general health. Talk to your GP or optometrist about how often you should have an eye exam.

Healthy diet

A healthy, balanced diet has numerous benefits to your health, including your eyes. Some nutrients and vitamins, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins C and E, have been shown to support eye health and reduce the risk of several eye diseases.

Avoid digital eye strain

Prolonged screen time without a break can result in digital eye strain (computer vision syndrome). While it doesn’t cause any permanent damage to your eyes, digital eye strain can be uncomfortable and cause symptoms such as headaches and blurred vision.

To reduce digital eye strain:

Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Adjust the lighting on your screen to reduce glare

Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry or uncomfortable

Protect your eyes from the sun

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can increase the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, avoiding the sun during peak hours, and wearing a hat with a brim when outside.

Quit smoking

In addition to damaging your overall health, smoking also increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and damage to the optic nerve.

Use the correct safety eyewear

Make sure you protect your eyes by wearing the correct protective eyewear when engaging in activities such as home improvements, gardening or certain sports.

Manage chronic (long-term) health conditions

Some chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can severely affect your eye health if not managed properly. Work with your healthcare provider and get regular eye check-ups to minimise eye damage from chronic conditions.

When should I see a doctor for eye problems?

Some eye problems can develop quickly, and damage to your sight may be irreversible. See your doctor if you notice any changes to your vision and seek immediate attention if you experience:

Sudden vision loss

Severe eye pain

Flashes of light or new floaters

Eye redness with vision changes

Double vision

Does private medical insurance cover eye health?

Private medical insurance in the UK may or may not cover eye health, and optical cover varies depending on your provider, the specific policy and any optional add-ons.

What your optical cover provides also varies, and some policies only cover specific types of eye care, such as inpatient treatment for conditions like cataracts, while others cover outpatient treatments like routine eye tests, glasses, and contact lenses.

Optical cover typically excludes pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures and procedures like laser eye surgery. It may cover routine eye care such as eye tests, prescription glasses or contact lenses and treatment for eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Cash plans are an alternative option that can help with the cost of eye care by offering money back on routine treatments such as contact lenses, glasses or eye tests.

At Morehealth, we offer a range of health plans that offer in-person and digital services with exclusive benefits, discounts and cashback offers at a budget to suit you.
NHS Waiting Times: The Latest Figures

NHS waiting times have soared in recent years as the combined effects of the pandemic, chronic underfunding and staff shortages have taken their toll. While private healthcare cannot replace all NHS services such as Emergency and maternity care, it can offer a fast, convenient alternative for many treatments including non-urgent operations and cancer care.

In a survey by the Independent Health Providers Network, the primary reason for choosing private healthcare was being unable to get an appointment quickly enough, and a growing number of people are choosing to bypass NHS waiting lists and opt for private medical care.

In this article, we will look at current NHS waiting times, explore why NHS waiting times are so long, and ask what the current government’s plans are to tackle this urgent issue.

Current waiting times for NHS treatment

According to the British Medical Association (BMA), the latest referral to treatment (RTT) figures for January 2025 are as follows:

The waiting list for treatment stood at 7.4 million cases.

The estimated number of patients waiting for care at the end of February 2025 was 6.24 million people.

Around 3.02 million of these patients have been waiting for longer than the government target of 18 weeks.

Approximately 194,000 of these patients have been waiting over a year for treatment.

The median waiting time for patients waiting to start treatment was 14.2 weeks in February 2025. The median waiting time pre-COVID (in February 2020) was 7.5 weeks.

Waiting times for cancer treatment

Cancer is a disease where fast diagnosis and treatment are essential and delays in starting treatment can have a significant impact on the outcome. The current government has set out three new targets that aim to speed up cancer diagnosis and treatment in the NHS. These include:

Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS): aims that 75% of patients referred for suspected cancer are diagnosed or have cancer ruled out within 28 days of referral.

31-day Treatment Standard: this focuses on the time it takes for cancer patients to start treatment after a decision to treat has been made. The target is for 96% of patients to start treatment within 31 days of that decision.

62-day referral to treatment standard: the target is that 85% of cancer patients receive their first treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral or consultant upgrade.

Are the new targets for cancer care being met?

According to Cancer Research UK:

The faster diagnosis standard target of 75% is currently being met with 80.2% of patients being diagnosed, or having cancer ruled out within 28 days of an urgent referral in February 2025.

The 62-day referral to treatment standard target of 85% is currently not being met with only 67.0% of people in England receiving their diagnosis and starting their first treatment within 62 days of an urgent referral in February 2025.

The 31-day decision to treat standard target of 96% is currently not being met with 91.8% of people starting treatment within 31 days of a decision to treat in February 2025.

*Figures are for England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own figures.

Why are NHS waiting lists so long?

There is no single reason why NHS waiting lists are so long and the increase in waiting times in recent years is a result of multiple factors including:

Backlog of patients during COVID: during the pandemic, many non-urgent operations and appointments were delayed or cancelled resulting in a huge backlog of patients that still impacts waiting times today.

Underfunding: chronic underfunding of the NHS has impacted its ability to treat patients quickly.

Staff shortages: problems with recruitment and retention due to poor pay and working conditions, burnout and a lack of university places mean there are not enough nurses, doctors and other health professionals working in the NHS.

An ageing population: older people tend to have more health issues and need more medical care, increasing demand on the NHS.

Social care issues: patients who need ongoing social care such as home care or a place in a nursing home cannot be discharged from hospital if those services are not available, reducing bed capacity.

Are NHS waiting times improving?

Since the pandemic, waiting times have increased dramatically. In February 2020, the median waiting time for treatment was 7.5 weeks, but by February 2025 that number had risen to 14.2 weeks.

In March 2021, 4.95 million people were waiting to start treatment. That number had soared to 6.24 million by February 2025.

However, in recent months, NHS waiting times have begun to decline. According to recent statistics published by NHS England:

Waits of more than 65 weeks for treatment were 13,223 at the end of February 2025, compared to 75,004 at the end of February 2024 (a reduction of 82.4%).

1,691 patients were waiting more than 78 weeks for treatment at the end of February 2025, compared to 9,969 at the end of February 2024 (a reduction of 83.0%).

More than 2.3 million diagnostic tests were delivered in February 2025, compared to 2.2 million in February 2024 (an increase of 4.1%).

The percentage of 6-week waits in February 2025 was 17.5%, down from 22.4% in January 2025.

What is the government’s plan to tackle NHS waiting times?

In January 2025, the UK government launched the Elective Reform Plan which aims to reform elective care and return to the constitutional standard of 92% of patients receiving treatment within 18 weeks by March 2029. In January 2025, this figure was just 59%. The government plans to achieve this by implementing the following measures:

Increased appointments: The government is aiming to deliver millions more appointments, including diagnostic tests, scans and operations, per year.

Community diagnostic and surgical hubs: the creation of these hubs will allow more treatments to be carried out outside hospitals, increasing hospital capacity.

Utilising the private sector: increased collaboration with the private sector will help reduce hospital waiting lists.

Deployment of expert “Crack Teams": teams of top clinicians will be sent to hospitals to help implement reforms and treat more patients.

Compulsory training: Administrative staff will undergo mandatory training to improve communication with patients and make it easier for them to access appointments.

Greater use of the NHS App: Making appointment information available through the NHS app for 85% of acute trusts.

Private medical care in the UK

While the NHS remains a critical lifeline for millions, private medical care in the UK offers an alternative that’s becoming increasingly attractive to those seeking fast, accessible care.

Although NHS waiting times are improving, the wait for non-urgent treatment in the NHS remains a concern for many. Private healthcare offers many benefits including faster access to specialists and treatments, better facilities, a choice of specialists and hospitals, and access to treatments unavailable on the NHS.

Which private medical insurance is best for me?

The best private medical insurance for you depends on several factors including your age, general health, where you live, and your budget.

At Morehealth, we’re experts in private medical insurance and have years of experience in comparing the UK’s leading insurers to find the best policy for you at the best price.

When it comes to your family’s health, choosing the right health insurance plan can offer you peace of mind, safeguard your family’s health and provide your loved ones with fast, expert medical care when they need it. In this article, we’ll look at what family health insurance is, what to look for in a policy and what is the best family health insurance in the UK in 2025.

What is Family Health Insurance?

Family health insurance is a single policy that provides private medical insurance for the whole family including you, your partner, your children, and sometimes other family members.

What are the Benefits of Family Health Insurance?

Family health insurance offers many benefits including:

Cost-effective Cover: family health insurance is often cheaper than having individual policies for each family member.

Faster Diagnosis and Treatment: private health insurance allows you to bypass NHS waiting times and access appointments sooner, leading to a faster diagnosis and treatment.

Choice of Hospitals and Doctors: some private healthcare plans allow you to choose your doctor and the hospital where you are treated.

Access to Different Treatments: private healthcare may allow you to access treatments and drugs not available on the NHS.

What Does Family Health Insurance Cover?

What is covered by your family health insurance depends on your provider and the type of policy you have. In the UK, family health insurance typically covers you and your immediate family (your partner and children) for acute (short-term) conditions and illnesses.

Family health insurance usually covers:

Outpatient Treatment: including specialist consultations, diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans and treatments that don’t require a hospital stay.

Inpatient Treatment: includes treatment, procedures and surgeries that require a hospital stay.

Choice of Private Hospitals, Specialists and Facilities: Some insurers offer access to a network of private hospitals, specialists and facilities, allowing you to choose your healthcare provider.

Cancer Cover: Many private health insurance policies include comprehensive cancer cover, allowing you faster access to specialists and treatments. This may include treatments and drugs not available on the NHS.

In addition, private family health insurance may include the following, either as part of a comprehensive policy or as an optional extra.

Private GP Services: some private health insurance policies offer access to private GP appointments either in-person or online.

Dental Cover: some private health insurance policies include optional dental cover.

Additional Therapies: Some private health insurance policies may include cover for additional treatments such as physiotherapy.

Mental Health Cover: some private health insurance policies offer coverage for mental health conditions and access to mental health professionals.

Home Nursing: Some comprehensive health insurance policies may include cover for home nursing services.

What Does Family Health Insurance Not Cover?

Family health insurance in the UK typically doesn't cover pre-existing conditions (a condition you were diagnosed with before your policy started), or chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma or arthritis.

In addition, your family health insurance may not cover:

Normal pregnancy and childbirth (complications may be covered).

Treatment for alcohol or substance abuse.

Infertility treatment.

Cosmetic surgery and aesthetic procedures.

Emergency treatment.

Self-inflicted injuries, or injuries resulting from extreme sports like skydiving or bungee jumping.

How to Choose A Family Health Insurance Plan in the UK

The right private health insurance for your family depends on several factors including the level of coverage you need, your individual circumstances and your budget.

Some important questions to ask when choosing the right health insurance policy for your family include:

What do I want my family health insurance to cover?

Depending on your budget and family’s needs, you may opt for a basic health insurance policy that only covers inpatient and cancer care, or a more comprehensive policy that includes outpatient treatment, dental care, physiotherapy, virtual GP services, and mental health support.

What coverage does the policy provide for children?

If you have children, you may want to choose a policy that includes their specific needs such as vaccinations and routine check-ups. It's also important to check the age criteria for any children covered. Some policies may offer coverage up to a certain age, and coverage may depend on whether or not the child lives with you. Some health insurance policies offer free coverage for children up to a certain age.

Can I add extra coverage?

Many health insurance policies allow you to customise the coverage to best suit your family's needs by adding extras such as mental health support, physiotherapy or dental care.

How much does the policy cost?

Private medical insurance can be expensive, and it’s important to get the most cost-effective policy for your family. Compare premiums from different providers with what you get for your money including wellness incentives and optional extras. It’s also important to look at the excess (the amount of money you pay when you make a claim).

How are the claims process and customer service?

In addition to the coverage and cost, a clear and efficient claims process is a must when choosing private health insurance for your family. Great customer service is also essential, should you need help, or if any problems arise. A good way to find information on this is to check the ratings and reviews of your insurer on independent review sites like Trustpilot.

Does the policy offer any additional incentives?

In addition to health coverage, some health insurers like Vitality offer incentives to encourage healthy behaviour by providing discounts on fitness membership, health checks and screening.

What exclusions apply to the policy?

Before deciding on a health insurance policy for your family, be sure you understand what exclusions apply, i.e. what isn’t covered under your policy. While standard exclusions are discussed above, different policies may vary and may depend on factors such as your medical history.

How Much Does Private Family Health Insurance Cost in the UK?

The monthly cost of private health insurance in the UK varies depending on factors like age, location, level of cover, and the number of family members insured. On average you can expect to pay between £130 and £220 per month for family health insurance in the UK.

March 2025 is endometriosis awareness month and at Morehealth, we’re joining the global campaign to raise awareness of this common, but often poorly understood condition.

Endometriosis fast facts

Endometriosis affects around 10% of women and girls of reproductive age globally.

Endometriosis is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK.

Women with endometriosis are more likely to experience depression and anxiety and have a higher risk of developing heart disease.

Endometriosis is frequently misdiagnosed or diagnosed late. On average it takes 8 years and 10 months from the first GP visit to getting a diagnosis.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to your uterus lining (endometrium) grows outside your uterus (womb). It commonly affects your reproductive organs including your ovaries, fallopian tubes and the lining of your pelvis, but can also affect your bladder and bowel. Rarely, endometriosis can develop in areas outside your pelvis, such as your chest.

The build up of this abnormal tissue can lead to inflammation, scarring and painful cysts. Scar tissue can also build up between your reproductive organs causing your organs to “stick together” and resulting in pain and fertility problems.

Endometriosis can affect anyone assigned female at birth and of reproductive age (from when your periods start to when they stop).

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis symptoms vary from person to person and can range from mild or non-existent to severe and debilitating. The symptoms of endometriosis can resemble those of other conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or fibroids which may lead to the condition being misdiagnosed or remaining undiagnosed for months or even years.

The most common symptom of endometriosis is pain in the lower abdomen (pelvis). This pain may be worse during your period, during or after sex or when passing urine or opening your bowels.

Other symptoms of endometriosis may include:

Heavy periods

Bleeding between periods

Fatigue

Nausea (feeling sick)

Abdominal bloating

Depression or anxiety

Pain or bleeding in other parts of your body, such as your chest, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath and coughing up blood

Difficulty getting pregnant or infertility

What causes endometriosis?

It isn’t fully understood what causes endometriosis, but possible causes include:

Genetic factors: Endometriosis may run in families.

Retrograde menstruation: This is where menstrual blood flows back through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity rather than out of the body.

Environmental factors: Exposure to toxins in the environment is a possible cause of endometriosis.

Problems with your immune system: A weakened immune system is common in people with endometriosis, but it is unclear whether this is a cause of the condition or occurs as a result of endometriosis.

Hormones: The female hormone oestrogen may promote endometriosis, and the condition may be due to an imbalance in your body's hormonal system.

Surgery: Endometrial tissue may be moved accidentally during pelvic surgery such as a Caesarean (C-section) or hysterectomy.

Lymphatic or circulatory spread: Endometriosis tissue may spread around the body in the blood or lymphatic system.

Metaplasia: A process where a body cell changes into a different type of cell, usually due to inflammation.

How is endometriosis diagnosed?

Your GP or specialist will start by asking you about your symptoms, including what your symptoms are, how severe they are, when or if they get worse or better and how long you have been experiencing them.

They will perform a physical examination, including an internal (vaginal) examination and an examination of your abdomen.

If your doctor suspects endometriosis, they may refer you for further tests including:

Ultrasound scan: Uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of your pelvis and reproductive organs.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): A non-invasive procedure to examine your pelvic organs for signs of endometriosis.

Laparoscopy: A procedure where a thin tube with a light and a camera is inserted through a small incision (cut) in your abdomen to look for areas of endometriosis. Your surgeon may also take a biopsy or remove any areas of endometriosis during the procedure.

How is endometriosis treated?

There is currently no cure for endometriosis, and treatment focuses on managing and relieving symptoms such as pain. Depending on your symptoms and how your endometriosis affects you, your doctor may refer you to another specialist for support with issues like depression or infertility.

Endometriosis medication

The first line of treatment for endometriosis is usually medication. There are two main types of medication used to treat endometriosis:

Pain medication: May include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen, or painkillers like paracetamol.

Hormonal therapies: The combined contraceptive pill or other hormonal treatments such as an intrauterine device (IUD), contraceptive implants or injections can help ease the pain associated with endometriosis.

Endometriosis surgery

If medication hasn’t helped relieve your symptoms, or your endometriosis is severe or affecting your fertility, your doctor may recommend surgery. The most common type of endometriosis surgery is laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. This is a minimally invasive procedure where the surgery is performed through small incisions in your abdomen using a light, a camera and special instruments. For more severe or complex endometriosis, your doctor may recommend open surgery (laparotomy).

Endometriosis surgery may be used to:

Remove areas of endometriosis or ovarian cysts (fluid-filled sacs on your ovaries) caused by endometriosis.

Remove part of your bladder or bowel, if they are affected by your endometriosis.

Remove your womb (hysterectomy) or ovaries (oophorectomy).

Endometriosis alternative treatments

In addition to conventional medicine, there are a range of alternative treatments available that may reduce your risk of developing endometriosis or help relieve your symptoms.

Alternative endometriosis treatments include dietary changes, exercise, supplements, herbs and acupuncture. It’s important to remember that just because a treatment is “natural,” it doesn’t mean it’s safe and effective. Many alternative treatments for endometriosis lack scientific evidence and some may even be harmful or interact with other medications you are taking. Always talk to your doctor before starting any alternative treatment for endometriosis.

Chinese medicine for endometriosis

Some studies have found that traditional Chinese herbal medicine may reduce the inflammation and pain associated with endometriosis.

Studies on the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture found that it can help reduce the severity and duration of endometriosis-related pain and improve your well-being and quality of life.

Diet and endometriosis

There is a possible link between diet and endometriosis, though more research is needed.

Dietary fats: Intake of a common saturated fatty acid called palmitic acid and trans fats increase your circulating oestrogen concentrations which may raise your risk of endometriosis. Conversely, omega-3 fatty acids may protect against endometriosis.

Dietary fibre: A high-fibre diet may help reduce circulating oestrogen and lower your risk of endometriosis.

Meat consumption: A diet high in red meat and poultry has been linked to an increased risk of endometriosis. Following a plant-based or vegan diet for endometriosis may be beneficial, but more research is needed.

Dairy products: Contain the female hormone oestradiol and palmitic acid, which have been associated with an increased risk of endometriosis.

Exercise and endometriosis

Regular exercise (around four hours per week) is recommended for people with endometriosis. Physical activity may help ease endometriosis symptoms by regulating your body’s hormone levels and reducing body fat. Exercise also releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, reduces stress and increases wellbeing.

The best exercise for endometriosis includes:

Aerobic exercise: Exercise that increases your heart rate and oxygen consumption such as running, walking, swimming and cycling.

Yoga: A 2017 study found that hatha yoga reduced pelvic pain in people with endometriosis.

Pelvic floor exercises

Dietary supplements for endometriosis

Research into supplements to relieve symptoms of endometriosis is still in the early stages and remains inconclusive. A 2022 review concluded that some supplements including vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, omega 3, vitamin C, and vitamin E may be beneficial as a complementary treatment for endometriosis.

Is endometriosis covered by Private Medical Insurance?

Most PMI does not cover chronic (long-term) conditions such as endometriosis, however some aspects of your treatment may be covered.

Most policies cover diagnosis and initial treatment to stabilise your condition (providing it is not listed as an excluded condition in your policy).

Initial treatment may include surgery to diagnose and remove areas of endometriosis and possibly a hysterectomy and/or oophorectomy.

Ongoing monitoring or treatment such as pain management or hormone therapy is not usually covered under PMI.

Flare-ups of your condition are usually covered.

If a new treatment aiming to cure a chronic condition becomes available, most insurers will cover it, however, treatment may be removed if it becomes clear that it is not working.

Treatment for fertility problems, that can occur as a result of endometriosis are not covered by PMI.
