# What Is a Health Insurance Broker?

By [**Morehealth**](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/author/morehealth) on Oct 30, 2026

![\<span id="hs\_cos\_wrapper\_name" class="hs\_cos\_wrapper hs\_cos\_wrapper\_meta\_field hs\_cos\_wrapper\_type\_text" style="" data-hs-cos-general-type="meta\_field" data-hs-cos-type="text" \>What Is a Health Insurance Broker?\</span\>](https://www.more-health.co.uk/hubfs/AI-Generated%20Media/Images/Health%20Insurance%20Broker%20Explained%20And%20Regulated.png)

A health insurance broker is an FCA regulated specialist who compares private medical insurance from several insurers, explains the differences in cover and arranges the policy for you. Most UK health insurance brokers do not charge you a fee. They are paid commission by the insurer when you take out a policy. A good broker also helps at renewal and when you need to claim, not just at the point of sale.

That is the short version. The rest of this guide explains what a broker actually does day to day, how they compare with going direct or using a comparison site, how they are paid and regulated, and the questions worth asking before you choose one.

## **What does a health insurance broker do?**

A health insurance broker works between you and the insurers. They find out what you need, compare suitable policies from the insurers they work with, explain the exclusions and small print, and set the policy up. After that, they usually stay involved, reviewing your cover at renewal, helping you switch if it makes sense and stepping in if a claim gets complicated.

The word broker covers a fairly wide range of firms, from large national businesses to small specialist teams. What they have in common is that they are not the insurer. They do not set the price of the policy or decide whether a claim is paid. Their job is to help you choose well and to deal with the insurer on your behalf when that is useful.

## **How the process works in practice**

The details vary from broker to broker, but the shape is usually the same. As a rule, a good broker will:

- Ask About Your Needs And Budget
- Check Your Medical History
- Compare Suitable Insurers
- Explain Exclusions And Limits
- Arrange The Policy
- Review Your Cover At Renewal
- Help When You Need To Claim

The first conversation is mostly questions. When someone contacts us, we start with the basics, a date of birth, a postcode and a name, because those drive much of the price. From there it is about what you want the policy to do, who it is for and anything in your medical history that could affect cover.

The comparison is where a broker earns their keep. Policies from different insurers can look similar on price but differ a lot underneath, in outpatient limits, hospital lists, cancer cover and how they treat your past health. A broker lines those up so you are comparing like with like, then talks you through the trade offs.

Here is a simple example. Say you are 52, self-employed, and you had physio for a back problem 3 years ago. One insurer may suit you better on underwriting, another on hospital choice near where you live. A comparison site shows you prices. A broker can tell you which of those policies would actually treat the back problem as excluded, for how long, and what that means in practice.

If you are looking for cover just for yourself, our page on[individual health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/individual-health-insurance) explains the options.

## **Broker, going direct or a comparison site?**

There are 3 main ways to buy private medical insurance in the UK. Going direct means dealing with 1 insurer and getting that insurer's view of your needs. A comparison site gives you a quick list of prices from the insurers on its panel. A broker compares across several insurers and explains the differences in cover, which matters most when your situation is not straightforward.

| | **Going direct** | **Comparison site** | **Health insurance broker** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Insurers compared | 1 | Those on the site's panel | Those the broker works with, up to the whole market |
| Advice on which policy suits you | Limited to that insurer's products | Usually none online | Yes, explained in plain English |
| Help with a medical history | Only for that insurer's terms | Little or none | Compares how different insurers would treat it |
| Support at renewal | Renewal notice from the insurer | Usually none | Review and comparison against the market |
| Help with claims | Direct with the insurer | Usually none | Can help if a claim gets complicated |
| Cost to you | The premium | The premium | Usually the premium only, no broker fee |

None of these routes is wrong. If you already know exactly what you want and you are in good health, a comparison site can be a reasonable place to benchmark prices. Going direct can work if you have already settled on an insurer. A broker tends to add the most value when there is a judgement call to make.

### **Whole of market or a panel?**

This is worth checking. Some brokers are whole of market, meaning they compare policies from across the market. Others work with a selected panel of insurers, which can still be a good service but gives you a narrower view. Neither is automatically better, but you should know which you are getting. Morehealth is whole of market, and you can see who we work with on our page to[compare health insurance providers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-providers).

The differences between insurers are not always obvious from a quote. Cancer cover is a good example, where 2 policies at a similar price can handle drug limits and NHS fallback very differently. Our[cancer cover comparison](https://www.more-health.co.uk/cancer-cover-compared) shows how much that varies.

## **How are health insurance brokers paid?**

Most UK health insurance brokers are paid commission by the insurer when you take out a policy, so their advice is free to you. Some charge a fee instead of, or as well as, commission, particularly for larger business schemes. Either way, a broker should be clear with you about how they are paid before you buy, and if they are not, it is a fair question to ask.

To be open about our own position, Morehealth is paid commission by the insurer when you take out a policy. It is not added to your premium, and we do not charge you a fee for our advice.

A reasonable concern is whether commission could sway a recommendation. Ask any broker how they decide what to recommend, and expect a straight answer that starts with your needs rather than a particular insurer.

## **How brokers are regulated in the UK**

Any firm that advises on or arranges insurance in the UK must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, either in its own right or as an appointed representative working under another firm's authorisation. You can check any broker on the[FCA Financial Services Register](https://register.fca.org.uk/), which shows its status, its permissions and whether it is directly authorised. Morehealth is directly authorised by the FCA, number 815733.

Regulation matters most when something goes wrong. If you are unhappy with a broker's service, you complain to the firm first. If that does not resolve it, you can take the complaint to the[Financial Ombudsman Service](https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/), which is free to use.

Many specialist brokers also belong to the Association of Medical Insurers and Intermediaries, the trade body for the health insurance industry. Membership is not a regulatory requirement, but it shows a firm is engaged with the sector's standards. Morehealth is a member.

## **When a broker helps most**

A broker is most useful when the choice involves judgement rather than just price. That usually means you have a medical history, you are switching from an existing policy, you are buying for a business, or your renewal price has jumped and you want to know whether to stay or move. In those situations, a wrong choice can cost you cover, not just money.

### **If you have a medical history**

Insurers can treat the same condition quite differently, and the underwriting method you choose changes what is excluded and for how long. This is an area we spend a lot of time on, because the right answer often depends on the detail. It also helps to understand where the line sits for long-term illnesses, which our guide to[chronic conditions explained](https://www.more-health.co.uk/chronic-conditions-explained) sets out.

### **If you are switching or renewing**

Renewal is when most people think about their cover, and in our experience policy reviews tend to cluster around spring and autumn. Switching can bring potential savings, but a careless move can reset a moratorium or lose cover you have built up. A broker can compare your current policy against the market and, where it suits you, help you switch on continued terms. Our guide to[switching health insurance companies](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/switching-health-insurance-companies-guide) explains how that works.

### **If you are buying for a business**

Company schemes come with their own options, from how many people are covered to underwriting choices that are not available on individual policies. There are also tax and reporting points for the employer to think about. Our page on[business health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/business-health-insurance) explains how group cover works.

## **How to choose a good health insurance broker**

Most brokers will tell you they are independent and offer great service, so it pays to ask a few specific questions before you commit:

- Are You FCA Authorised?
- Are You Whole Of Market?
- How Are You Paid?
- Will You Help At Renewal?
- Will You Help If I Need To Claim?
- Are You An AMII Member?

The answers should be clear and quick. Check the FCA status yourself on the register rather than relying on a logo. And notice how the conversation feels. A good broker asks a lot of questions about you before talking about price, and is happy to tell you when a cheaper option would not suit you.

It is also worth asking who you will deal with. With a small team, you are more likely to speak to the same person each time, which helps when you call about a renewal or a claim a year or 2 later. You can read more[about Morehealth](https://www.more-health.co.uk/about) and how we work.

## **Frequently asked questions**

### **Is it worth getting health insurance through a broker?**

For many people, yes, especially if you have a medical history, are switching or are buying for a business. A broker compares several insurers, explains the differences and usually does not charge you a fee. If your needs are simple and you already know what you want, comparing prices yourself can be enough.

### **Which health insurance broker is the best in the UK?**

There is no single best broker for everyone. Look for a firm that is FCA authorised, tells you whether it is whole of market or works from a panel, is clear about how it is paid and offers support at renewal and with claims. How well a broker listens to your situation matters more than its size.

### **What are the disadvantages of using an insurance broker?**

A broker that works from a limited panel may not show you the whole market. The quality of advice also varies between firms, and the process can take a little longer than an instant online quote because a good broker asks more questions. Some brokers charge a fee, so check before you go ahead.

### **Do health insurance brokers charge a fee?**

Most do not charge individuals a fee, because they are paid commission by the insurer. Some brokers charge fees for certain services or larger business schemes. Whatever the arrangement, you should be told how the broker is paid before you commit, and it is reasonable to ask if anything is unclear.

### **Is it cheaper to buy health insurance direct?**

Not automatically. Going direct gets you one insurer's price, while a broker can compare several and suggest changes, such as the excess or hospital list, that could bring potential savings. With Morehealth, our commission is paid by the insurer and is not added to your premium.

## **Talk to an independent health insurance broker**

If you would like help comparing your options, Morehealth is an independent, FCA regulated, whole of market broker with more than 15 years of experience. We will explain your options in plain English, compare policies from leading UK insurers and stay on hand at renewal and when you need to claim.
