## **Joint policy or 2 separate policies?**

A joint policy gives you one premium, one renewal date and one insurer to deal with, and some insurers offer a discount when you cover a partner on the same policy. It is often the simplest way for couples with similar ages and needs to arrange cover.

It is not always the best value, though. If you and your partner have different ages, medical histories or priorities, 2 separate[individual health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/individual-health-insurance) policies can sometimes work out better. Because we are independent, we can compare both routes side by side and show you the difference before you decide.

## What we compare for you and your partner

We compare[leading UK health insurance providers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-providers), including Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, The Exeter and National Friendly, and look closely at:

- Couples Discounts And Overall Value
- Hospital Lists Near Where You Live
- Outpatient Limits And Excess Options
- Cancer Cover And Mental Health Support
- How Each Partner's Medical History Is Treated

Some insurers apply the same benefits to both of you, while others let each partner tailor parts of the cover. We explain how each option would work for you as a couple.

## Cover that changes with your life together

Your needs will change over time. You might add children later, move home, retire or leave an employer scheme. When that happens, we review your options and help you make changes in a way that protects each person's medical history where needed.

Our guide to[health insurance options](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-product-options) explains the main choices you can adjust, such as your excess, hospital list and outpatient cover.

## Already have a joint policy?

Premiums can change at every renewal. Our free health insurance check compares your renewal, benefits and hospital access against the wider market. If switching could improve value or cover, we explain how both partners' underwriting may be protected. If staying is the best option, we will tell you and, where possible, try to negotiate a discount with your current insurer. ## Frequently Asked Questions

What is health insurance for couples?

Health insurance for couples is a single private medical insurance policy that covers you and your partner. It pays for eligible private treatment of acute conditions that begin after cover starts, such as specialist consultations, diagnostic scans and hospital treatment, while you both stay fully entitled to NHS care.

With a joint policy you have one premium, one renewal date and one insurer to deal with. Some insurers apply the same benefits to both of you, while others let each partner tailor parts of the policy. Each person still has their own medical history, exclusions and claims.

Private cover works alongside the NHS. Emergency care, routine pregnancy and the ongoing management of chronic conditions remain with the NHS under most policies. Read more in our guide to[what joint health insurance is and how it works](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/what-is-joint-health-insurance).

Can unmarried couples take out health insurance for couples?

Yes. You do not need to be married or in a civil partnership to take out a joint policy. Most insurers simply ask that you live together at the same address, although a few specialist providers have their own eligibility rules, such as minimum ages, so it is worth checking first.

Bupa, for example, states that unmarried partners who live at the same address can be covered on a joint couples policy, and Aviva confirms you do not have to be married. The same rules apply to all couples, whatever your relationship.

If you do not live together yet, 2 separate individual policies may be the more practical option for now. We confirm each insurer's eligibility rules before you apply, so there are no surprises.

Is health insurance for couples cheaper than 2 separate policies?

Often, but not always. Some insurers offer a discount when you cover a partner on the same policy, and a single policy can be simpler to manage. However, if you and your partner have very different ages, health or cover needs, 2 separate policies can sometimes offer better value.

As an example, at the time of writing Bupa states that couples could save 5% compared with buying 2 separate policies, and notes it may change or remove this offer at renewal. Aviva says whether joint cover is cheaper depends on each person's age and who the main policyholder is.

The only reliable way to know is to compare a joint quote with 2 single quotes on similar cover, which we can do for you. Our guide to[how much private medical insurance costs](https://www.more-health.co.uk/how-much-does-private-medical-insurance-cost) explains the factors that affect the price.

How does underwriting work on health insurance for couples?

Each partner is underwritten individually, even on a joint policy. That means your partner's medical history does not reduce your cover, and any exclusions apply only to the person they relate to. For a new policy, the main options are moratorium and full medical underwriting.

On a moratorium basis, anything either of you has had symptoms, advice, diagnostic tests or treatment for in the 5 years before cover starts is not covered for the first 2 years. It may then be covered once that person has been free of symptoms, advice and treatment for 2 consecutive years. With full medical underwriting, you each provide your medical history when you apply.

One partner's history can still affect the overall price of a joint policy, which is another reason to compare it with separate cover. Our guide to[health insurance underwriting](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-underwriting) explains each option in detail.

What is the best health insurance for couples?

There is no single best policy for every couple. The right choice depends on your ages, where you live, the hospitals you would want to use, the benefits you both value and your budget. As an independent broker, Morehealth compares leading UK insurers to find the policy that fits you both.

We look at couples discounts, whether each partner can tailor their own benefits, how any no claims discount is handled, hospital lists, outpatient limits, cancer cover and mental health support. We then explain the differences in plain English.

Our advice is free, we are paid by the insurer you choose, and our commission is not added to your premium. As a small, UK based team, we offer a personal service from your first conversation through to renewal and claims. Our advisers are available Monday to Thursday, 9am to 6:30pm, and Friday, 9am to 5pm. Find out more[about Morehealth](https://www.more-health.co.uk/about).

What happens to a joint health insurance policy if we separate?

Usually, one of you keeps the existing policy and the other takes out cover in their own name. It is worth asking how each person's underwriting and any no claims discount would be handled, so neither of you loses cover for conditions that are currently covered.

Depending on the insurer, the partner leaving the policy may be able to keep their existing underwriting terms on a new policy. If not, continued personal medical exclusions with another insurer may allow them to carry their current position across rather than starting again.

Timing matters, so the new policy should start on the day the old cover ends to avoid a gap. We can review the options for both of you, and it can be a good moment to check that each person's cover still suits their needs.

Can I add my partner to my workplace health insurance?

Often, yes. Many employer schemes let you add a partner, usually at your own cost. Whether that works out better than a separate policy for your partner depends on the price, the level of cover and what would happen to their cover if you left your job or retired.

Cover through an employer scheme usually ends when you leave. Where the scheme covers you on a medical history disregarded basis, insurers can accept this underwriting when you move to an individual policy, subject to their criteria. In some cases carrying it over is not necessary, and a different option could reduce your premium.

If you are leaving an employer scheme or approaching retirement, we can help you arrange a[new private health insurance policy](https://www.more-health.co.uk/new-private-health-insurance) for you both and choose the right start date so there is no gap in cover.

Can we add children to our couples health insurance later?

Yes. Most couples policies can be extended to include children, and some insurers allow newborns to be added from birth. Each new member is underwritten individually, and routine pregnancy and childbirth are not usually covered, so it is worth speaking to us before starting a family.

Insurers price children in different ways, and some offer family discounts once children are added. That means the insurer that suits you best as a couple may not be the best value once your family grows.

Some insurers allow new members to join part way through the policy year, while other changes are made at renewal. Read more in our guide to[what family health insurance covers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/what-is-family-health-insurance).

Can we switch our couples health insurance to another insurer?

Yes. You can switch a joint policy, most commonly at renewal, and in many cases each partner's existing underwriting can be carried across. Continued personal medical exclusions keeps current exclusions the same, while a continued moratorium lets you keep your original start date rather than starting again.

Each insurer has its own criteria for accepting a switch, and these apply to both of you. They typically include no consultations in the past 12 months, no ongoing symptoms or treatment and nothing planned.

It is best to start a few weeks before your renewal date, although reviews can still be done up to 14 days after it. If staying with your current insurer is the best option, we can help you adjust your excess, outpatient cover or hospital list instead.
