## **Why families choose private medical insurance**

Many parents look at private cover for the reassurance of knowing that, if someone needs a consultation or scan, they will not be left waiting longer than necessary. With[NHS waiting times](https://www.more-health.co.uk/nhs-waiting-times) still a concern for many families, private cover provides an additional route for eligible care.

Depending on the insurer and level of cover, a family policy can include:

- Faster Access To Specialist Consultations And Scans
- A Single Policy For You, Your Partner And Your Children
- Choice Of Hospitals And Appointment Times
- Cancer Treatment Within Private Facilities
- Remote GP Appointments On Many Policies

## How Morehealth helps you compare family cover

Insurers treat families in different ways. They differ on who can be added, how children are priced, which family discounts apply and how each person's medical history is assessed. We compare[leading UK health insurance providers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-providers), including Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, The Exeter and National Friendly, so you can see how each one would work for your household.

We look closely at hospital lists, outpatient limits, cancer cover, mental health support and your excess. Our guide to[health insurance options](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-product-options) explains the main choices, and we talk you through which ones matter for your family.

## Cover that changes as your family does

Your family's needs will not stay the same. You might start with a policy for 2 and add children later, or need to review cover as children grow up. If it is just the 2 of you for now, our guide to[joint health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/what-is-joint-health-insurance) explains how cover for couples works.

When your circumstances change, we review your options and help you make changes in a way that protects each person's medical history where needed.

## Already have a family policy?

Family premiums can change at every renewal. Our free health insurance check compares your renewal, benefits and hospital access against the wider market. If switching could improve value or cover, we explain how each family member's underwriting may be protected. If staying is the best option, we will tell you and, where possible, try to negotiate a discount with your current insurer. Find out how we[review or switch an existing policy](https://www.more-health.co.uk/review-or-switch-existing-policy).

## Frequently Asked Questions

What is private health insurance for a family?

Private health insurance for a family is a single policy that covers you, your partner and your children for eligible private treatment. It focuses on acute conditions that begin after cover starts, such as specialist consultations, diagnostic scans and hospital treatment, while everyone in your family stays fully entitled to NHS care.

Instead of managing separate policies, everyone sits under 1 policy with 1 renewal date. Core cover usually includes inpatient and day patient treatment, with options to add outpatient consultations, diagnostic tests, therapies and mental health support. Many policies also include remote GP appointments, and some provide accommodation for a parent if a child needs to stay in hospital.

Private cover works alongside the NHS. Emergency care, routine pregnancy and the ongoing management of chronic conditions remain with the NHS under most policies. Read more in our guide to[what family health insurance covers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/what-is-family-health-insurance).

Who can I include on a family private health insurance policy?

Most insurers let you include your partner and your children on a single policy. You usually do not need to be married, and some insurers do not require everyone to live at the same address. A few go further, with AXA Health allowing parents, grandparents and grandchildren on its AXA Health Plan.

Bupa, for example, allows you to add your partner and children only, and states that you do not have to be married or live at the same address. Friends and other non-family members cannot usually be added, so they would need their own[individual health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/individual-health-insurance).

Upper age limits for children also vary. Some insurers include children up to around 18, while others extend this to 21 or 25 for those in full-time education or still financially dependent. We confirm each insurer's rules for your household before you decide.

How much does private health insurance for a family cost?

There is no single price, because premiums depend on who is covered and the cover you choose. The number of people, everyone's ages, your postcode, the hospital list, outpatient limits, excess and underwriting method all affect the cost, which is why we compare quotes from several insurers for your family.

Optional extras, such as therapies, enhanced mental health cover or dental benefits, add to the premium. Insurers also price children differently, so the same family can receive quite different quotes.

Premiums are reviewed each year at renewal and tend to rise as you get older, so it helps to check your cover regularly. You will not see instant prices on our website, as insurers need a few details to quote accurately. To get started, we usually need the name, date of birth and postcode for each person.

Our guide to[how much private medical insurance costs](https://www.more-health.co.uk/how-much-does-private-medical-insurance-cost) explains the main factors.

Is it cheaper to add children to private health insurance for a family?

Often, yes. Covering your family on a single policy can work out cheaper than separate policies, and some insurers offer family discounts or reduced pricing for children. The size of any saving depends on the insurer, your children's ages and the cover you choose, so it is worth comparing.

As an example, at the time of writing Bupa states that families pay 10% less than the price of separate policies, where cover includes at least 1 adult and 1 or more children. It also states that if you cover 2 or more children aged 19 or under, you only pay for the oldest child. Bupa notes that it may change or remove these offers at renewal.

Other insurers use different structures, so the cheapest headline offer is not always the best value once you compare the cover. For more ideas, read our guide on[how to reduce your private medical insurance premium](https://www.more-health.co.uk/how-to-reduce-your-private-medical-insurance-premium).

Can I add a new baby or partner to my family health insurance?

Usually, yes. You can normally add a partner or child to an existing policy, and some insurers allow newborns to be added from birth. Each new member is underwritten individually, so it is worth speaking to us before making the change to check how their cover will work.

Routine pregnancy and childbirth are not usually covered by standard plans, so most policies will not pay for the birth itself, although your baby can usually be added afterwards.

Some insurers allow new members to join part way through the policy year, while other changes are made at renewal. If a new partner already has their own policy, they may be able to carry their existing underwriting across rather than starting again. We help you make changes in a way that protects each person's medical history where needed.

How does underwriting work for each family member?

Each person on a family policy is underwritten individually. That means a family member's medical history does not affect anyone else's cover, and any exclusions apply only to the person they relate to. For a new policy, the main options are moratorium and full medical underwriting.

On a moratorium basis, anything a family member has had symptoms, advice, diagnostic tests or treatment for in the 5 years before cover starts is not covered for the first 2 years. It may then be covered once they have been free of symptoms, advice and treatment for 2 consecutive years.

With full medical underwriting, you provide medical history for each person when you apply, and any exclusions are confirmed at the start. Children's history counts too, so it helps to note anything they have seen a GP or consultant about. Our guide to[health insurance underwriting](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-underwriting) explains each method in detail.

Can I add my family to my workplace health insurance instead?

Often, yes. Many employer schemes let you add a partner or children, usually at your own cost. Whether that works out better than a separate family policy depends on the price, the level of cover and what happens if you leave your job, so it is worth comparing both options.

Cover through an employer scheme usually ends when you leave. Where the scheme covers you on a medical history disregarded basis, insurers can accept this underwriting when you move to an individual policy, subject to their criteria.

Timing matters, as policies are designed to cover conditions that begin after the start date. If you are leaving an employer scheme and arranging a[new private health insurance policy](https://www.more-health.co.uk/new-private-health-insurance) for your family, we can help you choose the right start date so there is no gap in cover.

Can I switch my family's private health insurance to another insurer?

Yes. You can switch your family policy, most commonly at renewal, and in many cases each person's existing underwriting can be carried across. Continued personal medical exclusions keeps current exclusions the same, while a continued moratorium lets you keep your original start date rather than starting the 2 year period again.

Each insurer has its own criteria for accepting a switch, and these apply to every person on the policy. They typically include no consultations in the past 12 months, no ongoing symptoms or treatment and nothing planned.

It is best to start a few weeks before your renewal date, although reviews can still be done up to 14 days after it. If staying with your current insurer is the best option, we will tell you and, where possible, try to negotiate a discount. Request a[free health insurance check](https://www.more-health.co.uk/free-financial-health-check) to compare your options.

What is the best private health insurance for a family?

There is no single best policy for every family. The right choice depends on who you want to cover, your children's ages, the hospitals near you, the benefits you value most and your budget. As an independent broker, Morehealth compares leading UK insurers to find the policy that fits your family.

We look at who each insurer allows on a family policy, how it prices children, mental health support for adults and children, outpatient limits, hospital lists and whether parent accommodation is included. We then explain the differences in plain English, so you can decide with confidence.

Our advice is free, we are paid by the insurer you choose, and our commission is not added to your premium. As a small, UK based team, we offer a personal service from your first conversation through to renewal and claims.
