Your 60s often bring new priorities, whether that is retirement, travel or more time with family. Private health insurance over 60 can give you a potentially quicker route to specialist consultations, scans and treatment for new conditions, working alongside the NHS.

Morehealth is an independent, FCA regulated health insurance broker. We compare cover from leading UK insurers, explain the options in plain English and help you choose a policy that suits your health, your plans and your budget. Our advice is free. We are paid a commission by the insurer you choose, and this is not added to your premium.

## **Cover that reflects this stage of life**

Many insurers accept new applicants in their 60s, and some have no maximum age for joining. Age does affect the price, though, and your medical history plays a bigger part in what is covered. That makes the detail of each[individual health insurance](https://www.more-health.co.uk/individual-health-insurance) policy especially important.

When we compare[leading UK health insurance providers](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-providers), including Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, The Exeter and National Friendly, we look closely at:

- Hospital Lists Near Where You Live
- Cancer Cover And Access To Treatment
- Outpatient Limits And Excess Options
- Underwriting That Suits Your Medical History
- Options That Help Manage Premiums Over Time

## Retiring or leaving an employer scheme?

Many people first look at private cover when they retire and their workplace health insurance comes to an end. We help retirees keep private medical insurance after leaving employment, and we look at whether your existing underwriting can be carried across so conditions currently covered stay covered where possible.

Timing matters, so it helps to speak to us before your employer cover ends. Our guide to[company health insurance after retirement](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/company-health-insurance-after-retirement-guide) explains the main options.

## Already insured? Review before you renew

Premiums usually rise as you get older and as medical costs increase, so it is worth reviewing your cover before each renewal. We compare your renewal with the wider market and explain whether switching could improve value or cover without losing your current underwriting terms. If staying put is the best option, we will tell you. Find out how we[review or switch an existing policy](https://www.more-health.co.uk/review-or-switch-existing-policy).

## Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get private health insurance over 60?

Yes. Many UK insurers accept new applicants in their 60s and beyond, and some have no maximum age for joining. Aviva, for example, offers cover to anyone aged 18 or over with no upper age limit. Others set their own age limits for new customers, so it pays to compare.

Once your policy is in place, it renews each year. Your insurer reviews the price at each renewal, and you can usually adjust your cover at that point too.

You will be asked about your medical history, and the underwriting you choose affects how past conditions are treated. We check each insurer's eligibility rules before you apply, so you know where you stand. Our[health insurance FAQs](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-faqs) answer other common questions.

How much does private health insurance over 60 cost?

There is no single price. Your premium depends on your age, where you live, whether you smoke, the level of cover, your excess, the hospital list and the underwriting you choose. Because insurers price risk differently, quotes for similar cover can vary noticeably, which is why comparing the market matters.

Age is one of the biggest factors, as the likelihood of needing treatment increases over time. Premiums usually rise at each renewal to reflect this.

To prepare quotes, we usually need your name, date of birth and postcode, plus details of the cover you want. Our guide to[how much private medical insurance costs](https://www.more-health.co.uk/how-much-does-private-medical-insurance-cost) explains the factors that affect the price.

Is private health insurance worth it if you are over 60?

It depends on your priorities and budget. For many people in their 60s, the value lies in potentially quicker access to diagnosis and treatment, more choice over where and when they are treated, and peace of mind. Against that, premiums rise with age and policies do not cover everything.

It helps to think about which treatments matter most to you and how long you might otherwise wait. Our page on[NHS waiting times](https://www.more-health.co.uk/nhs-waiting-times) explains how waiting lists can affect access to treatment.

If budget is a concern, a more focused policy can still provide cover for major treatment, for example by limiting outpatient cover or choosing a higher excess. We explain the trade offs honestly, with no pressure to proceed.

Will pre-existing conditions be covered on private health insurance over 60?

Usually not at first. On moratorium underwriting, conditions you have had symptoms, advice or treatment for in the 5 years before cover starts are excluded for at least 2 years. With full medical underwriting, they are reviewed upfront and may be excluded. If you are switching, existing terms can often be carried across.

On a moratorium, a condition may become eligible once you have been free of symptoms, advice and treatment for it for 2 consecutive years after your policy starts.

Chronic conditions are treated differently. The ongoing management of a chronic condition is not covered, although some policies may cover initial diagnosis or treatment of an acute flare up, depending on the insurer. Our guide to[health insurance underwriting](https://www.more-health.co.uk/health-insurance-underwriting) explains each option in detail.

What happens to my health insurance when I retire?

If you are covered through work, your cover usually ends when you leave. You do not necessarily have to start again, though. Where your employer scheme was on a medical history disregarded basis, insurers can accept this underwriting when you move to an individual policy, subject to their criteria.

This can help protect cover for conditions that are covered today. If your scheme used other underwriting, continued personal medical exclusions or a continued moratorium may let you keep your current position on a personal policy.

In some cases carrying over your previous underwriting is not necessary, and choosing a different option could reduce your premium. Speak to us before your leaving date so we can help you arrange a[new private health insurance policy](https://www.more-health.co.uk/new-private-health-insurance) with no gap in cover.

Why does private health insurance cost more after 60, and can I reduce it?

Premiums rise with age because the likelihood of needing treatment increases, and renewal prices also reflect rising medical costs and any claims. You can often reduce the cost by adjusting your excess, hospital list or outpatient cover, or by reviewing the market at renewal.

Some insurers also offer a 6 week option, where you are treated on the NHS if it can provide inpatient treatment within 6 weeks, and privately if not. Not every insurer offers this, so we check which ones do.

Every saving involves a trade off, so we explain what each change means in practice before you decide. Our guide on[how to reduce your private medical insurance premium](https://www.more-health.co.uk/how-to-reduce-your-private-medical-insurance-premium) sets out the main options.

What is the best private health insurance over 60?

There is no single best policy for everyone over 60. The right choice depends on your health, where you live, the hospitals you would want to use, how much outpatient and cancer cover you want and your budget. As an independent broker, Morehealth compares leading UK insurers to find the right fit.

We look at each insurer's age rules, underwriting options, cancer cover, hospital lists and how they price renewals, then explain the differences clearly.

Our advice is free, and our commission is not added to your premium. As a small, UK based team, we offer a personal service from your first call through to renewal. Our advisers are available Monday to Thursday, 9am to 6:30pm, and Friday, 9am to 5pm. Find out more[about Morehealth](https://www.more-health.co.uk/about).

Can my partner and I take out private health insurance over 60 together?

Yes. Most insurers let couples who live at the same address share a joint policy, and some offer a discount for doing so. Each of you is underwritten individually, so it is worth comparing a joint policy with 2 separate ones, especially if your health or cover needs differ.

A joint policy means one premium, one renewal date and one insurer to deal with. If one of you is still covered through work, or you retire at different times, separate policies may be simpler for now.

We can quote both routes so you can see the difference. Read more in our guide to[what joint health insurance is and how it works](https://www.more-health.co.uk/blog/what-is-joint-health-insurance).

Does private health insurance over 60 replace the NHS?

No. Private health insurance works alongside the NHS rather than replacing it. You will usually still see your GP for a referral, the NHS continues to provide emergency care, and the ongoing management of long term conditions such as diabetes or arthritis normally stays with the NHS.

When you need treatment, the usual process is a GP referral, followed by authorisation from your insurer before you see a specialist or have treatment. Many policies also include a digital GP service.

You remain fully entitled to NHS care at all times. Our guide to[chronic conditions](https://www.more-health.co.uk/chronic-conditions-explained) explains how insurers treat long term conditions.
